Dear Rick Shelton and Dan Nicholson, Thank you very much. You people were right. I had configured "Networking" in the kernel config file. However, I didn't configure the network card. It is a "VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II]". I reconfigured the kernel. Now the ethernet card is detected. As both of you said, now I am getting conflicts because I am running dhcp and dhclient. As per your guidelines, I will (hopefully) sort that out as well. With regards and lots of thanks
