Dear Rick Shelton and Dan Nicholson,
Thank you very much. You people were right. I had configured 
"Networking" in the kernel config file. However, I didn't configure the 
network card. It is a "VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II]". I 
reconfigured the kernel. Now the ethernet card is detected. As both of 
you said, now I am getting conflicts because I am running dhcp and 
dhclient. As per your guidelines, I will (hopefully) sort that out as well.
