I'm not sure if this will help, but these are the steps I followed:
(Where I could I followed the blfs instructions.)
Installed:
which-2.16.tar.gz ( for alsaconf, in alsa-utils )
dialog-1.1-20070704.tar.gz ( for alsaconf )
alsa-lib-1.0.14a
alsa-utils-1.0.14
I ran ldconfig after installing each program (I think install scripts
probably cover it, but I wasn't taking any chances ;)). I then ran
alsaconf (as root), changed /etc/asound.state to "-rw-r-r--" (I'm not
sure if I should have let the group have write access; yet...), and
added my user to the audio group. Oh, I had to manually load my
soundcard module as well; I forget if I did it before running alsaconf.
If alsaconf works it will turn the sound up on alsamixer and you can
test everything with speaker-test.
Good Luck,
Trent.
