Composite was enabled in my xorg.conf. I commented it out, but the
result is the same. Based on your experience, is more of an Xserver
issue or KDE?

It definitely sounds like an xserver or driver issue. What kind of
video card do you have? Can you attach the output of
/var/log/Xorg.0.log?

You hit the nail right on the head! The card is a nVidia Corporation NV15 [GeForce2 GTS/Pro] (rev a3), running the '7185' driver. Based on your suggestion to disable composite, I decided to revert to the 'nv' driver. That solved the problem. Took it a step further by going back to the nvidia driver, and commenting all the driver driver options. Restart X and it still works. By process of elimination, I found ' Option "RenderAccel" "true"' to be the culprit.
