Sorry, I do not know if this question goes here... anyway
It's two days I am recompiling linux kernel but I cannot understand why:
1) "dmesg | grep eth" gives:
eth0: RealTek RTL8139 at 0xdc81a000, 00:0a:e4:57:5e:3a, IRQ 11
eth0: Identified 8139 chip type 'RTL-8100B/8139D'
so eth0 should be realtek (8139too modules) as it always has been
2) "ifconfig eth0" gives
eth0: error fetching interface information: Device not found
so the OS doesn't see the realtek as eth0 but....
3) "ifconfig eth2" gives
eth2 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0A:E4:57:5E:3A
inet addr:192.168.1.117 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:607 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:626 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:410249 (400.6 Kb) TX bytes:217737 (212.6 Kb)
Interrupt:11 Base address:0xa000
the OS sees eth0 like eth2. :-o ????
I have only one card and it always has been eth0. It is sufficient to
set ip address to eth2 to use it as eth0 but why the hell is the
system behaving like that?
thanks
