As a sanity check, I went back and recompiled X.org and everything (fonts too) entirely, being extra cautious to cut-and-paste from the book. I did notice that I had glossed over the installation of the Dejavu fonts, and have since installed them. I was careful to ensure that no Xorg fonts got put anywhere fontconfig might be looking, but it seems I've failed again. I was hoping this would remedy my problem, however, it doesn't seem to look any better now: http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/6733/morebadfontsea8.jpg The font in the Xterm seems to look just fine (am I wrong?), but the fonts in the browser are just heart-breaking. I must be missing something obvious, and I'm sure I'll have the Dept. of Redundancy Dept. bonk me several times repeatedly when some kind soul points it out to me :).
