Actually, now I've got firefox built and can read the xorg archive
in comfort, I'm starting to feel ambivalent about 7.3. I'm using
the patch at the moment, but it doesn't enable the Scroll Lock LED (I
use that when I map my keyboard to russian or greek). I might just
have to learn to look at the screen to see what I have actually keyed.

Hopefully, 1.4.1 will fix things without introducing new problems
(I can dream, can't I ? ;-)

There was one big usability shock - keyboard autorepeat had gone.
Fortunately, adding 'xset r rate' to ~/.xinitrc fixed it (man xset,
but for me 'xset r' and 'xset r rate 0' didn't work, although
'xset r' on the command line seemed ok).
