That is right. I'm trying to compile ATLAS and LAPAK and then GSL and 
Octave.
I have already upgraded the compiler and the system seems to be working 
without any glitches but, who knows...
So now I have gcc-4.2.2 and I am reading on about ATLAS, LAPAK and friends.

Thank you for the information about gotoblas. The optimization seems to 
be extended in comparison with ATLAS. I hope I will be able to assess 
and compare their performance.
