I'm OK with it...after I dropped back to xf86-video-ati-6.6.3 and used the pre-release xserver, but then the drivers are where the sticking point is. The as released 7.3 is screwed though IMO. There isn't a stable (assuming 6.8.x) ati release for the newest pre server. Guess I made a bad choice to build the *pre* release. :-) Overall, I am quite happy with the modular build. Dan covered the issue well. I could go either way WRT the drivers...but that wouldn't have made a single bit of difference with my problem above.
