Initially, try starting it with a window-decorator, ie:-

compiz --replace & emerald --replace &

...Though i suspect it's more likely an X-server configuration issue. 
I've successfully done this on a Gentoo-box with a Radeon card, even 
getting KDE to use it instead on it's KWIN default from login, but have 
no experience with nVidia.

Strictly speaking, KDM is your *Display* Manager - KWIN is your 
window-manager (see above).

Tell me about it! With my setup, i'm not even sure i need the --replace 
option, but it's undocumented as far as i can tell, & i have higher 
priorities than fine-tuning Compiz-Fuzion at the moment.

If the decorator addition doesn't help, i'll see if i can find some 
X-server tweaks for your card...
