Who owns, and with what permissions, the devices you're having problems with. On system the DVD drive (/dev/sr0) is owned by 'root', group owned by 'disk', and readable/writable by both. The same is true of all disk devices, whether internal or external. I assume you should see something similar, since I've done nothing to customise this. Simon.
