Normally, it won't be a problem. For compiling code, there's no real difference between inside the chroot and not - the only real exception being if a package cares about the kernel, e.g external drivers. That's how I normally work - after an LFS build, boot into it once to verify it works, then return to the host system and build enough packages inside chroot to get a basic environment to work in (X, network connection, etc).
