I can confirm that kdebase does compile with gcc-4.3 so that was the root issue. I am now recompiling kde completely as well at qt to try to fix the fonts issue in firefox and crashes in konquror.
Thanks to all who assisted me with this. For all who are having problems with compile errors stating something like "invalid conversion from const char* to char*. Downgrade gcc from 4.4 to 4.3 and it will stop complaining. I will probably open a bug report with kde for this one as they need to make their code compliant with the new gcc restrictions but they probably don't care anymore about 3.5 seeing as they are hard at work on 4.x.
