Yeah, the book still has 0.5.9.1, which is pretty old now - it was
released about 2 years ago, and things have moved a lot since then.

Shouldn't be too many more dependencies than in the book. For 0.5.12, my
scripts list dbus-glib, ConsoleKit, PolicyKit, pciutils, usbutils,
eject, and acl, although not all of them are actually mandatory. Let me
know what you're having trouble with, and I might be able to help...

That said, this is one of those points in time where things are a little
messy - there are a lot of changes going on around that level of the
stack. Short version is that Hal will soon be disappearing, it's core
functionality merged into udev, and the rest split into the DeviceKit
family of projects.
