So, finished my (reduced) build, looked round for alternative window
managers which don't need core fonts and don't need gtk : nada. Set
up my 'lfs' user to use fluxbox - no problems with vim. Not exactly
a conclusive "works for me", but I can apparently not replicate the
problem.
The only change I've made in the meantime is to try to improve the
spurious mouse events, and I'm not sure if it helps - things seem a little
more usable with it, but the problem was always a bit random. Anyway,
I found this in the Arch wiki. It's also documented in the man page for
xorg.conf, but without an explanation of *why* you might want to do
this:
In Section "Module" replace
Load "xxtmod"
with
SubSection "extmod"
Option "omit XFree86-DGA"
EndSubSection
