I assume you're talking about the development book. If so, BLFS's stance on the matter is this: don't use rc2. When we update MPlayer we plan to use a recent snapshot of the SVN code. MPlayer is a fairly active project, they've just stopped bothering with releases, opting for a non-release policy instead. This policy seems to be becoming more and more popular as WebKit adopt this policy as well, but it seems to work well enough for them.
