FWIW, I was on the Xorg mailer at the time that the decision was made to make these changes.
The rationale was: The default screen with the weave background and giant "X" cursor was ugly, and pretty should be the default--users shouldn't see something ugly while waiting for the WM to load. Apparently solid black with no pattern and no cursor is pretty. Also, some people hit ctrl+alt+backspace by accident, lost all the stuff they hadn't saved, and complained. Apparently there are some laptop keyboards out there somewhere that make that combination easy to hit by accident. The changes were quite controversial but they went through anyway. -- William Tracy Work: [email protected] Play: [email protected] Cell phone: (805) 704-0917 Internet phone: (707) 206-6441 -- http://linuxfromscratch.org/mailman/listinfo/blfs-support FAQ: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/faq.html Unsubscribe: See the above information page
