It should be okay with the HD5 series The driver in seeing radical changes daily and has strong developer support and will be the driver of choice when mesa 7.8 and the .33 kernel come out. Some of the dev's are AMD employee's and they are pushing the code though legal as they right it.
Right now 3d and KMS require bleeding edge Mesa, DRM, Xorg -ati driver and a .32+ kernel to work well. They are not as feature complete as the catalyst driver, but as I said they are moving quickly. Honestly I'd wait a few months for the OSS driver to stabilize and stick with the NV card.
