I've had similar problems with 3 different nvidia cards. An 8400, an 
8500 and a 9800. None of them work with the current nv driver and 
xorg-server 1.7.x. The solution was to use a 6000 or 7000 series card or 
(where I couldn't change the card) use the closed source nvidia driver.
