I sometimes think the Gnome developers have gone mad. FWIW, I've been happy with icewm: http://www.icewm.org/ which is great about not loading down the hardware, but it's best to configure it using the text config files as the graphical config interface is not very good. I also like Claws mail: http://www.claws-mail.org/ although I've heard good things about Thunderbird.
