But for the record VirtualBox does offer a way to use a physical disk, however you'd still find yourself having to build up to whatever the guest additions depend on, my best guess would be X.
Just thought I'd mention this because using a physical partition is quite useful, even if you happen to decide to build with the livecd in a vm.
