thanks for the advice.  I had installed consolekit  after pulseaudio and did 
not have   ~/module-console-kit.so.  I re-installed pulseaudio an now have a 
larger number of modules including the above.  However I have the same 
problem.  (I also  notice that the link on the cblfs page to pulseaudio has 
gone red. )

This seems to be a bug as reported hre:-
https://bugs.launchpad.net/debian/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/390528

I even tried this patch

if  anyone else had any success with it or suchlike  I would be grateful for 
advice
