 On my 7500 xf86-video-ati-6.12.7 is working fine
(with the 1.7.6 server and Mesa-7.7.1).  FWIW, I had
had to upgrade Mesa for my 9200se (glxgears
locked up), but I don't recall seeing any problem
on the 7500.

 Hmm, actually I did see _something_ funny in the past
year or so, but I no longer remember exactly *what* was
odd.  I've had to change an entry in my xorg.conf
from
 DefaultDepth 16
to
 DefaultDepth 24

 I'd forgotten this, but your title eventually rang a bell.
If you are using xorg.conf (I guess you must be), try
changing or deleting that line.
