For the moment, this is just a heads-up, but since ghostscript-8.71
is in the book I figured I should report it sooner rather than later
(unlike my problems with other things with versions that aren't in
the book).

I was using 8.70 for a long time, with a sed to fix it up for
x86_64 (that's probably in the list archives, or failing that
download my recent buildscripts from lfs/~ken/ ). I figured that
now is probably an appropriate time to update most of the old
versions I've been building. My printer is an epson 360 inkjet, and
I print with cups->ghostscript->gutenprint.

 With cups=1.4.4, ghostscript-8.71, gutenprint-5.2.* attempting to
print the cups test page produces a page, but it's just horizontal
bands of dark grey (i.e. black) with a few lighter bands. This
seems to use about 6% of my black ink cartridge, so its a pain.

Reverting to 8.70, it works fine again. Maybe I'll get round to
looking to see if any distro has fixed this, but for the moment I've
got a growing pile of issues with other packages and 8.70 just works.

This isn't the first time I've had printer problems, but trying to
change versions can be a pain, so I'll mention that the easiest way
to try different versions of any of these printer packages is:

in cups, delete the printer
stop cups server : /etc/rc.d/init.d/cups/stop
remove /etc/cups /usr/lib/cups /usr/lib/libcups* /var/spool/cups
 /usr/lib/libgutenprint*
rebuild cups (if you are changing the version, you might want to
rebuild gtk+ after cups), rebuild ghostscript (no need to rebuild
the fonts), rebuild gutenprint
/etc/rc.d/init.d/cups start
add the printer and test it
