You were all right, all along, I WAS booting the kernel according to
uname -r and /proc/version i.e 2.6.27.10.

The reason?

I was using lilo, but it WASN'T the usual, ie. not updating lilo after
changing kernel or config file, but:

I had named both kernels, 2.6.27.10 and 2.6.35.4 - bzImage. This is
how it appeared in lilo.conf and lilo would not separate them - booting
the same
kernel for both partitions. My fault entirely

Anyway, this has inspired me to change to GRUB which I have now done.

Thanks to everyone who gave advice.

MAC
