Yeah, should have mentioned that.  I get the same error trying to start it as
root.  /var/lib/xkb permissions are 0777.

Another question I've got is does anyone know how xkbcomp is invoked by the
X server?  i.e. can I invoke xkbcomp on the command-line to simulate what
the X server is doing so I can see if there are any more warnings/errors?

Also, in the interests of full disclosure, I only normally compile the evdev
and vesa drivers.  I'm doing a much fuller driver build now, just in case I
need something else here.
