I apologise for this low quality help, I've only ever installed a
precompiled Open Ofice binary. However, with that I can install
dictionaries if I open it and click on:
Tools> Extension Manager
Maybe there is something similar in Libre Office?

P.S.
Thanks for your email, it may inspire me to try compiling Libre Office
over the weekend. It's the dependencies that have always put me of. I
looked at it the other day, got as far as Apache Ant and then just
couldn't be bothered! However, I do need to use an Office suite
sometimes so I should just put my head down and do it...
