Yes and no. I have done this long ago. But when using a machine which had the 
clock late by a very large amount of time, each time I turned it on, I 
discovered that this still did not work: after some time, ntpd had crashed. 
Looking in other distributions, I discovered that they only used -g. So I did, 
it took a little long to get the correct time, but no crash, anymore.

This seems to be an old bug (at least from 2005).
