99% of the kernel is drivers. And while I'm not an expert, it seems
likely that your bug is in the Intel KMS driver, that being the bit
responsible for doing mode switching and framebuffer these days...

Unfortunate, yes, but hey - bugs happen, and I doubt there's a single
non-trivial piece of software that doesn't have hundreds of them. And
driver bugs tend to be especially obscure, to the point where you might
be the only person on the planet with the right combination of hardware
to trigger it.
