 Searched with a bit more clue after posting - it's definitely
specific to the WM : according to
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=630972
it also applies to twm and xmonad, and another report for
awesomewm.

 There was a suggestion on an ubuntu forum to create a
~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css entry, but that made no difference.
