 Edgar might also wish to remove xorg.conf if an old one was present
(particularly if it specifies the keyboard and mouse drivers).

 For current xorg, an xorg.conf is NOT required - however, I think it
will default to an American keyboard, and not allow
ctrl-alt-backspace.

 Installing the following keyboard file (mode 644) at
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/11-keyboard.conf fixes both for me with
a British keyboard, adjust to suit whatever your wife is using [ I
guess "XkbLayout" "de" ] -
