If you are building a distro, or to allow yourself to change the video card later, building everything is probably the right approach for the book.
But, if the hardware is known, reducing what you build should be fine. I suspect your second problem was caused by a version mismatch, or else a typo in libdrm, but I'm fairly sure that what you've done should work.
