I think you are having a problem with what font is being used to display 
your message.  With a fixed font, all characters are the same width. 
That is, a period (.) has the same width as an M or a W.  In a variable 
font, they will be of quite different width and lines will not line up.

For my email, I read it in Biststream Vera Sans Mono.  For my terminal 
(konsole), I use Fixed [Misc].  I use Seamonkey as my email client ant 
it has specific settings to specify the fonts for Message Display and 
Send Format.  It also can get a little tricky when deciding what 
Character Encoding to use.
