In an infinite universe, I would devote a little time to this. In
reality, my accumulated backlog of computer things I *want* to do
covers about 2 years of my time. One of those things is backing up
my DVDs and (possibly) streaming them to my TV and hifi. Another is
editing and transcoding the short video clips I took last year. For
playing the backups and clips on my desktop PCs, vlc (as a wrapper
for ffmpeg, like ffplay but with controls to pause and move forward
or back) is perfectly adequate. So, I can live with not being able
to play the VOB files in vlc.

For ripping the VOB files, tccat [ transcode ] does the job. So,
if there is not a simple answer, I can't justify spending time on
this. Yes, the libdvd packages are used, so maybe that's where
things are going awry. But nobody else is apparently reporting
this, so it's probably some weirdness in *how* I build something in
the stack. So, thanks for the encouragement, but no.
