I'm assuming that you built all the necessary drivers (i.e. evdev and your particular graphics card), and sufficient fonts (I only use TTF, although BLFS, like some BSDs, still offers the core fonts) ? I can see that my own most recent build used the 1.12.2 server, but the book is at 1.12.3. I don't suppose that the version increment make a lot of difference, and I haven't built 32-bit x86 for ages, so I don't have any suggestions.
