Glad to tell that the problem is solved. Just decided today to ask
duckduckgo for "vmware player abnt2" and the first answer was good enough.

https://hamacker.wordpress.com/2007/06/20/vmware-e-os-caracteres-%E2%80%9C%E2%80%9D-e-%E2%80%9C%E2%80%9D-no-teclado-abnt2/

Add following line to /usr/lib/vmware/config in the host:

      xkeymap.keycode.211     = 0x073

Tested with two VM's: VMWLFS7.{0,1} and it worked! The / and ? you are
reading have been typed here, in VMWLFS7.1.

After each install or upgrade of vmplayer, this must be repeated,
according to the address above.

That page instructs to change the permissions of /usr/lib/vmware/config
to 664, which obviously is not necessary.
