I finally got X to work and the /dev/pts won't mount issue solved.
Turns out, I needed to start udev.

I installed cmake, but qtparted fails on make:

...qp_libparted.cpp: In member function 'int
QP_LibParted::get_filesystem(QP_FileSystem*)':
...'PedFileSystemOps' has no member named 'create'
                                           'resize'
                                           'copy'
                                           'copy'

I suspect that there is a problem because my Qt-4 installation is
under /usr/opt/qt-4.8.2.

Since this is C++ code, one problem could be that the header files
aren't getting found.

Has anyone else tried to get qtparted to install only to run into make
errors at the compile stage?
