Depends on your need and taste.

There is something called "Desktop Manager" which does some kind of that
... GDM, KDM, LightDM, XDM, SLiM and <insert any other that I didn't
mention DM here> use graphical logins instead of login terminal, which
personaly I can't stand.

I have no idea what's Dirk Dashing, but if you want to have 32bit
libraries on 64bit operating system you should have built CLFS, since it
teaches people how to utilize multilib (both 32bit and 64bit libraries
on one Intel/AMD system). You can also bootstrap your own compilers, but
I don't think that is going to be easy.

I recommend you check Fonts chapter on Xorg Configuration page. You'll
want to install at least dejavu fonts, freefont package and maybe
microsoft core fonts and cantarell-fonts. Traditional Xorg fonts are
ugly ...

I replied to that one.

One question ... Why o Why Acrobat Reader? What's wrong with opensource
pdf viewers like Evince, Okular or ePDFView? Also, you don't need GNOME
to build Evince. GNOME Components can be stripped from Evince leaving
GTK+ and PDF Renderer (Poppler) as deps at most ... If you prefer
something lighter, there's ePDFView in the book, but it's known to not
render properly sometimes (fix is to zoom in the page, I think.)

Your distro, your rules.
