I'm using cairo 1.12.2, but no, I have not seen the problem.

When I start both gimp and ff from the command line, I get no output at 
all in the terminal.

On my development system, I updated to cairo-1.12.4, overwriting the 
1.12.2 version.  There were no problems either rebuilding cairo or 
running firefox.  I'm using xorg 7.7.
