On 2.0 it seems that a double-click is needed to store the value, and restoring needs it to be selected (your mention of the stack was the key to me understanding this :) and then double-clicked.
I had assumed it was a single memory. What with the subtle differences between how calc and gnumeric operate, my head is slightly spinning but I'm getting there.
