LLVM is needed if you want to build Radeon 3D drivers - r300 and r600 gallium drivers. There is a note on this page: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/svn/x/x7driver.html#xorg-ati-driver If you don't have AMD hardware or you don't need 3D on them I guess you're good to go Also, I think that Mesa takes up much more space than llvm ...
