I've done in place upgrade of Glibc (2.13->2.14.1) and rebuild (2.16.0 
-> 2.16.0 + few patches + multilib).

I used binaries in /tools to remove old files and install new ones since 
I track which package install which file.

I'd strongly recommend using either /tools if you still have them or 
static shell and utilities like BusyBox.
