i guess it's more than 5 years i got the last real modem. i think it would be hard to get hands on an usb device meanwhile. for vdsl and sdsl i even don't know of any modem, all devices i know are "xDSL-Ethernet Router/Bridge"s (even if they are called modem). thus you just plug in your ethernet cable, set the default route and that's it... usually you had to set your system to a given network to connect the first time to the router, but meanwhile most routers have a dhcp server (plus a choice of nat, firewall, vpn...), most have at least 4 ethernet ports and/or wlan. some more expensive devices even support usb-devices like sticks, disks or printers to be shared. all routers i know have a web-interface for setup. some have an additional telnet interface. most current adsl-router support adsl2. even for cable-modems (tv or power), all providers i know here in ch, de, at and fr use now routers. last setup with ppp for a cable-modem is 3 years ago. thus the other 4 questions i just skip. here in ch they start at 31 CHF where as the only usb-modem i could see costs 26.90. go for an adsl2 ROUTER, not for a modem. tobias -- http://linuxfromscratch.org/mailman/listinfo/blfs-support FAQ: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/faq.html Unsubscribe: See the above information page
