For some years, I've been remarking how easy it is to key accents using "dead" keys in xorg on my British keyboard in a UTF-8 locale. The double quotes are because the accents are enabled using AltGr, they aren't on traditional always-dead (PITA) keys.
I've also specified which keys gave which accent (e.g. AltGr + ';' for acute) in the belief that most of these would be common to different keyboards. Turns out the position isn't quite like that, e.g. the us altgr-intl keyboard puts the accents on different keys, and has others (hook, horn - for vietnamese) that aren't in the gb offering. Along the way I've been happy to accept other AltGr keys (e.g. AltGr + 'a' for æ [ ae ], AltGr + 'k' for ĸ [ kra - it looks like a cyrillic or greek k if your font isn't up to this ]) without grokking where they came from. Now I've spent more time beginning to get to grips with this, and produced a guide to how you can find out what is available, and what else you might do to get other diacriticals and symbols.
