For the records:
We followed this hint and changed the partitions to gpt, on the flight, 
without damaging the system. We changed grub.cfg to partuuid (by the way, 
fstab did not accept it). As expected, the system now boots correct, either 
usb devices are connected or not.

However, it still makes a difference if "usb storage" is included in the 
kernel as ' * ' or as a module. If as ' * ', the denomination sda,sdb is 
arbitrary, but without influence on the boot process.
