 This is with Liberation Serif, which has complete-enough coverage
of latin fonts.  I don't see any indication that anything is
happening (no sign of an input 'field' appearing).

 Are you using the book's configure options ?  I'm :
 omitting system odbc and openldap,
 disabling gstreamer-0.10 kde kde4 and systray,
 enabling gtk3 and release-build
 and without afms fonts ppds system-jars.
