Notice that newest icedtea is 2.4.0, so, the binary openjdk in the book, probably built with 2.3.3 is too old. It would be safer to build it from the source. I have used OpenJDK-1.7.0.9 to successfully bootstrap a 64bit build of OpenJDK-1.7.0.21-2.3.9, in "LFS7.3" svn but icedtea used was 2.3.9. Only when writing this, I noticed that 2.4.0 was released, so up to date version should be OpenJDK-1.7.40-2.4.0. Similar convention is used in Debian, Ubuntu and ArchLinux, instead of the one in the book, as sometimes, icedtea is upgraded, but not openjdk, so both versions are relevant, now. Newest was updated yesterday in ArchLinux, but not yet in Debian/Ubuntu.
