Okay I've solved it, but someone who knows more than me can tell me why.

The '/etc/sysconfig/ifconfig.wifi0' file, recommended for dhcpcd, under 
wpa_supplicant-2.0 in BLFS, never worked for me.

I got manual connection immediately to the AP with the following in the above 
file:

ONBOOT="yes"
IFACE="wlan0"
SERVICE="dhcpcd"
DHCP_START="-b -q wlan0"
DHCP_STOP="-k"
