I'm not a fan of desktop environments, but I took a look at a few
of the mate apps last november when I was reviewing my options re
gnome (in the end, mate didn't meet my needs at that time - I've
stayed with gucharmap and evince from gnome but dropped gucalctool
and also introspection). I built on top of a fairly complete
desktop, so some dependencies were already installed. Much of mate
is of no interest to me, so I have no doubt removed packages that
will prove necessary for things *you* want to build. At that time
I built the following (I think 1.5 was probably a development
release) :

mate-common-1.5.0

looks as if rarian is needed (scrollkeeper-config) for the doc
utils, but I had already built it

mate-doc-utils-1.5.0

libIDL-0.8.14 (is in BLFS)

mate-corba-1.4.0

mate-conf-1.4.0 was needed for mate-character-map from a git pull.
But the latter segfaulted and seemed to not be under active
development.

mate-icon-theme-1.5.0

mate-desktop-1.5.3

libmatekeyring-1.5.0

mate-document-viewer-1.5.0 ("atril", renamed from "evince" : it
worked ok).

mate-calc-1.5.0 - I found this no better than late versions of
gucalctool.

Note that I didn't attempt to built the help system, nor its
terminal emulator (I use rxvt-unicode), nor a file manager (I don't
see the point of those).

They used ./autogen.sh, some needed --sysfonfdir=/etc (to override
$PREFIX/etc), many needed --disable-static to get rid of static
libs, mate-document-viewer needed --disable-caja because I didn't
want to build that.
