According to the Thunar FAQ, http://docs.xfce.org/xfce/thunar/faq, 
Thunar requires a theme with MIME icons, such as gnome-icon-theme.

Incidentally, Thunar also seems to have an optional dependency on gvfs, 
for volume mounting (via udisks2) and remote filesystem browsing (via 
Samba, etc.) - the Book just gives gvfs as a run-time dependency of 
thunar-volman.
