OK, Intel.  IN dmesg, you should find a line that is something like:

snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: irq 49 for MSI/MSI-X

Build all the devices in the kernel (Device Drivers -> Sound Card 
Support ->  Advanced Linux Sound Architecture -> PCI sound devices -> 
Intel HD Audio.

The only user level packages you need to start are ALSA Libs and ALSA 
Utils.  Then bring up alsamixer and un-mute everything and make volumes 
medium.

Then run speaker-test.  You should get white noise (static noise).  From 
there, you can start other packages, but you will have established the 
basic sound capabilities.
